If you are in the market for a new rental, make sure you jot down a list of questions that you want to ask prospective landlords. Here are some good ones to include. Who is responsible for lawn care?
What responsibilities will I have as a renter?
What responsibilities will you have as my landlord?
What appliances are included?
Can I have a pet?
What is your policy on overnight guests?
How do I report issues requiring maintenance?
How do I get in touch if there’s an emergency after hours?
What are the rules for renters?
If there is an HOA, what rules will I be expected to follow?
Do I need to pay extra to use any of the facilities here?
How many vehicles can I park?
How do I pay my rent?
How long is the lease term?
How much do you typically increase the rent each time a lease is renewed?
Should something happen that causes me to need to terminate the lease early, what would be my options and anticipated costs?
What changes can I make to the home?
What are the procedures for moving in and moving out?
What does it take for me to be approved as a renter?
What is the application process?
Are there any fees that I need to pay up front that are non-refundable?
Is renters insurance required?
By asking these questions before you sign a lease, you are setting yourself up for a smoother relationship between you as the renter and your landlord.
